Tribune Co. to cut jobs, move to 50% ad content

The Tribune Co., which publishes such major newspapers as the Chicago Tribune and LA Times, announced it is moving to an average of 50 per cent advertising in its content, in effect squeezing the news hole, and reducing the amount of editorial copy in its newspapers. It will also lay off more reporters, particularly large-newspaper reporters deemed not as productive as those at smaller newspapers. Traditionally, smaller newspapers get more copy out of their reporters, but sacrifice quantity for quality, while larger newspapers opt for quality over quantity. The end result: fewer news stories of decreasing quality.
