FOI hard to get; newspaper association

The Canadian Newspaper Association did its annual survey of various government groups, particularly police, to see how forthcoming¬† they were in complying with provincial laws on releasing information to the public. The report cited “disturbing inconsistencies” between a variety of agencies on how they responded. Part of this reflects that FOI law varies from province to province, and the feds have their own version of it; partly it reflects differing corporate cultures; and partly it reflects balancing freedom of information with protection of privacy.
