Dion vindicated by Council ruling

Remember the last federal election when Atlantic TV, a CTV affiliate, showed outtakes of Stephane Dion struggling to understand the convoluted questions being put to him, making him look like a dithering, blithering fool? Dion complained, saying they never should have been used because the questions weren’t clear, and when the interviewer finally got it right, he proceeded. Most media trainers, including me, will tell interview exactly the same thing, particularly in a taped interview: if you don’t understand the question, ask the interviewer to clarify. Last week, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council agreed with M. Dion. A panel said that broadcasting the false starts after promising not to do so was “discoureous and inconsiderate.”
