Radio profits up 12 per cent

The CRTC announced on Friday that profits at Canada’s 628 AM and FM radio stations rose from $299 million to $335 milion in 2007. Radio, the first free media platform, continues to thrive on local news, on-air personnel and the fact that most Canadians listen to the radio in the morning, in the car to work and after work, in the car. Yes, Internet radio is interesting (I like BBC World), but satellite radio is still struggling to beat this “old” medium. One caveat: the survey ended in August 2008, so we’ll see the effect of the ad meltdown has on this otherwise thriving medium.
